In this video I talk about the 5 biggest Keyword research mistakes I know of.

My name is Doug Cunnington and I’m the founder of Niche Site Project where I talk about Amazon Affiliate and Internet Marketing.

Keyword research can feel super tricky – and there are a lot of mistakes people make when they begin doing research for the right keywords.

The first mistakes is Selecting Keywords That Won’t Make Money

I did this when I first started my niche site – I built a whole site around a keyword that wasn’t going to actually make me anything.

I learned my lesson and decided to select keywords that are going to actually make me money.

The second is being too Greedy & Going For Keywords That Are Too Competitive. After I made the first mistake I decided to go after extremely monetizable keywords – but those were just too competitive and search volumes were too high.

Now, I like to focus on Keyword Golden Ratio compliant keywords that are not as competitive but also can be monetized.

The third Not understanding Data & Keyword Research Tools. When I got started I didn’t know what I was doing, and when I found that a lot of the popular tools like google keyword planner, even though the competition would say low, this is mainly around ADS. Advertisers can use that tool, but aren’t necessarily monetizable.

Number 4 is Singular vs. Plural (and bad grammar). For example, you can see that the keyword ‘ballpoint pen’ is too competitive, yet ‘ballpoint pens’ has high search volume yet way less competitive. You’ve found your loophole!

Bad grammar also can not make much sense, Google will overall prefer keywords with proper grammar.

The fifth point is Believing the Keyword Competitiveness score too much. There are a few tools that will give you a difficulty score, but most of the time those are estimations, which is not always accurate.

If you’ve ever thought this number was accurate and didn’t work for you – let me know in the comments below! And if it did work for you, let me know about that as well!

Bonus:

Time for a bonus point: Messing up the KW Density on a post. Now, I don’t know what the correct number would be because there are so many variations and situations that could be depending on the other competitors and length of the keyword.

SEO Quake:

What you can do is look at your competitors and analyze the data, and you can see how they are using the words.

Do the research and analyze the competition and figure out what the keyword density should be on your post for that particular phrase.
