Why should I use KCI? (00:20)
Organic search is the one of the best ways to reach new audiences and get more traffic to your website. If you can get people searching online to click on your site, you will be able to gain larger audiences for your organization. However, there is a lot of competition out there, and it can be a difficult task to figure out which keywords would be optimal. It is all a balance between search volume and search results – you want the figure out what people are searching for regularly, but also you don’t want a keyword that has so many results that it is impossible show up on the first page of Google Search.
What is the KCI and how do I find it? (01:10)
You only need two tools to calculate the KCI: Google Adwords Planner and Google Search.
It takes the potential annual search volume for a keyword and divides it by the volume of search results from Google. Remember, the higher the KCI, the better!
Let’s walk through an example from National Stroke Association as they decide whether they want to use “transient ischemic attack” or “mini stroke” as their keyword.
“Transient ischemic attack”
Step 1: Enter the exact search term into Google AdWords Keyword Planner (01:33).
Then if you scroll down, the results should appear. After, take the number in the average monthly searches boxes and place it into your Google spreadsheet.
Step 2: Enter the exact search term in quotations marks into Google Search. (01:48).
Find the number of results at the top of the page under the search bar. Record this number in your Google spreadsheet as well.
Step 3: Multiply average monthly searches by 12 and divide product by # of search engine results. (02:03)
So, in this case, we would take (170 * 12) ÷ 844 = 2.42 or you can check out our KCI Calculator (make sure to make a copy and use it, as this version is view only!).
Now, we’ll try to find the KCI for “mini stroke” with the exact same steps as above.
Step 4: Declare a winner! (02:42)
As a reminder, the higher the KCI, the better. As we can see from the chart above, the KCI of “transient ischemic attack” is almost 3, whereas the KCI of “mini stroke” is only almost 1. We go for the keyword with the higher KCI and therefore, “transient ischemic attack” is the one that we will choose the rank for.
Keep in mind that search ranking also depends on website size and domain authority, but KCI is a good starting point to get your site to rank on the first page of Google Search. Good luck!
